Abdelaziz Khlaifat was born in Wadi Mousa, Jordan, on December 1, 1965. After graduation
from Aqaba high school in 1984 he was admitted to Moscow Institute of Oil and Gas, Russia.
He obtained his BSc degree in Petroleum Engineering from Moscow Institute of Oil and Gas in
May 1990, when he also received a certificate in teaching Russian Language as a foreign
language. In December 1990 he began working in the college of engineering at Mutah University
as a research and teaching assistant. While at Mutah University he obtained a diploma in
education in May 1993. After less than three years of working at Mutah University he received
the Mutah University scholarship and decided to further his education and was admitted as
a graduate student to Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, in August 1993. There he worked under
the direction of Prof H. Arastoopour. He completed his Master of Chemical Engineering and PhD
in Chemical Engineering in December 1994 and May 1998, respectively. During his graduate
studies he worked as a part-time instructor at Robert Morris College in Chicago (1996-1998)
where he taught computer problem solving, web design with HTML and JavaScript, Visual Basic and
Visual C++. During his time at IIT he was involved in research and
teaching assistant activities and assignments. In August 1998 he went back to Jordan where he
started an assistant professor position in the department of chemical engineering at Mutah
University. In September 2000 he became the Chairman of Chemical Engineering for two years.
In August 2002 he was appointed as HRH Prince Faisal Dead Sea Studies Center Director.
Dr. Khlaifat was promoted to an associate professor in March 2004. In September 2003 he was
appointed as a vice dean of Engineering for two years. He spent his sabbatical year, starting
from September 2005, at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, Jordan, where he was appointed as an
assistant to the President for Planning and Development, Dean of Mining and Environmental
Engineering College, and Chairman of Tendering Committee. During his sabbatical he worked on
modeling and simulation of heat transfer through chromatographic column. In September 2006 he
was appointed as a director of Prince Faisal Center for Dead Sea, Environmental and Energy
Research.
Dr. Khlaifat is actively involved in management and scientific development of novel
water and environmental technologies and methodologies. He has authored/coauthored over twenty publications, including journal articles,
and book chapters, in the area of flow through porous
media, hydrocarbon reservoir engineering, NAPL transport, oil shale, photocatalysis, two
phase flow modeling and simulation.

Dr. Mufeed Batarseh has a Ph.D in Environmental Chemistry and Waste
Analysis (Chromatography) from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany.
Dr. Batarseh is a Researcher and Head of Laboratory Department at Prince Faisal
Center for Dead Sea, Environmental and Energy Research, Mutah University,
Jordan.
Dr. Batarseh research interest including the fate and behavior of persistent organic
pollutants POPs in the environment. Development of instrumental analytical methods
for different environmental sample matrices such as: residue analysis of semi-volatile
organic pollutants. Developing an analytical method for separation, clean up and quantification
of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs),
chlorinated benzenes (CBz) and chlorinated organic pesticides (COPs) in sediments
and wastewater samples. In addition, he is currently engaged in research activities
concerning fate and behavior of pharmaceuticals residues and veterinary medical substances
in the environment using radioactive traces (14C). He is conducting an intensive
investigation concerning the quality of the wastewater effluents, sludge, sediments,
plants irrigated with wastewater and impacts on soil physiochemical
properties.
He is an expert for different chromatographic and separation techniques such as GPC,
GC/MS, GC/ECD/FID, LC/UV/Flu and IC. Dr. Batarseh published several articles in the
fields of environmental analytical chemistry and monitoring of organic pollutants
in the environment. His research budge exceeds $US125,000 funded through national
and international funding organizations (WUS, IDRC, Mutah University and Higher Council
for Science and Technology).
