Under the patronage of his Excellency Eng. Mohamed Saqer Chief Commissioner of Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority and Prof. Dr. Abdelrahim Hunaiti President of Mutah University, Dr. Salim Al-Moghrabi the Commissioner for the Environment in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority opened a professional training course on “Winter School in Water Quality and Testing” started its activities in Aqaba yesterday April 3rd with wide participation of national and international researchers within the framework of Exceed project activities in the Middle East Region.
Dr. Al-Moghrabi pointed out the importance of this training workshop, which was the fruit of cooperation between Ben Hayyan International laboratories in Aqaba and the Prince Faisal Center for Dead Sea, Environment and Energy Research. He emphasized on the role of this cooperation in the quest of Ben Hayyan International laboratories in Aqaba to be adopted as a regional training center in cooperation with scientific institutions involved in research and studies. This workshop is aimed to exploit the advanced capabilities and equipment technology owned by Aqaba laboratories in addition to the availability of qualified technical personnel capable that enhance the interaction in the areas of Water Research and Development.
Dr. Hunaiti emphasized the importance of joint research and scientific studies between young scientists participating in this workshop which considered the first step in improving human life and survival in a clean environment free from pollution, considering the subject of water in Jordan more issues challenge due to the severe shortage in per capita fresh water resources, therefore, everyone is invited to participate in the development of water strategies for the development of water rationing and its uses to ensure sustainability without prejudice to the normal rates to the needs of each individual. Dr. Hunaiti expressed his gratitude to the Tecnische Universitat Braunschweig and DAAD in Germany for supporting this activity.
Dr. Batarseh through his Exceed project overview pointed out on the importance of convening this workshop in Jordan, which considered one of the poorest countries in the world in water resources, considering the conducting mega water projects in the Kingdom is of crucial importance and inevitable thing to deal with water shortages, pointing to the role of the Red Dead Sea Canal Project in supplying the Kingdom with their needs from the water.
Dr. Batarseh stressed on the importance of the contribution made within Exceed project by the German Foundation for Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in cooperation with the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany in supporting water projects in the world within an ambitious program involving the countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, considering that the future conflict in the region will be on the water to meet human needs.
He indicated that the training workshop will continue for a period of six days during which lectures and training will be given by specialists from the participating countries, researchers and specialists from Ben Hayyan laboratories. He gave the attention for other Exceed project activities that are taking place in Mexico and Burkina Faso and other countries to strengthen the network between Exceed partner countries in the water issue.
