Department of Biological Sciences

STUDY PLANS

The Department of Biological Sciences is one of five academic departments belong to the Faculty of Science at Mu'tah University . This Department was first established in 1990 with undergraduate study program only . Recently , an additional program of postgraduate study was newly incorporated in the year 2000 at the level of master degree . Currently , the department is undergoing a major revision in its undergraduate program to become more acquented with recent progress in molecular biology and biotechnology . The total members of faculty staff are thirteen.
Undergraduate program
The program offers B. Sc. degree in biology. Students will acquire broad knowledge in biological sciences with special emphasis on practical topics. The main goal of the program is to provide high skill capabilities for students . The will enable them to compete favorably for better opportunities in working fields of educational teaching , medical laboratories, food industry or pursuing higher postgraduate study . The program involves at least 130 credits hours, 69 are compulsory department credit hours.
Furthermore, the department of biological science offers courses in biology to other department at faculty of sciences. Some of these courses are also offered to the faculties of education, agriculture and nursing.
Students admitted to this program should hold at least good grades in B. Sc. degree of biology or other equivalent qualifications . The program is designed to provide 24 credit hours in advance biology courses. After which the student is asked to conduct a research work under the supervision of faculty member of staff. The research data are resented in a thesis, which is equivalent to 9 credits hours.
Those students who are successfully passed the courses examination with an a average of 70% and submit a convincing defense for their thesis in front of an examining committee, will be offered the M. Sc. degree in biology .
Teaching facilities
There are 6 major teaching laboratories in the department which are well equipped to provide practical courses in General biology , Vertebrates, Invertebrates, Animal physiology , Neurobiology , Plant physiology , Ecology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Microbiology , Biochemistry, Histology, Embryology , Medical tests, Biotechnology and Hematology.

Research facilities:
Research is carried out in 6 major laboratories which are shared between all members of staff. These labs may also hous research students who are assigned for supervision.
